Retro / Y2K
“The future used to look like this.”
Founded by Various indie designers, Jenny Hoyston, Clubhouse · 2000s web aesthetics, revived 2021 onward
Philosophy
The aesthetic of the early internet — bright colors, bubbly shapes, chaotic energy — was not "bad design." It was a specific moment in visual culture. Reviving it is nostalgia, not incompetence.
The Story
Retro / Y2K aesthetic draws from the visual vocabulary of the early 2000s internet: gradient text, bubble shapes, bright saturated colors, and a deliberate amateurishness that stands in contrast to the polished, expensive aesthetic of contemporary tech. Clubhouse's 2020 launch — with its warm yellows, bubbly shapes, and playful illustration — created the template. The aesthetic is polarizing by design: people who grew up with it feel immediate nostalgia, and people who did not find it baffling. The critical distinction: Y2K revival is not bad design that accidentally looks like 2003. It is precise recreation of a specific aesthetic moment, executed with contemporary craft. The bad old web was ugly by accident. Y2K revival is beautiful on purpose.
