Typographic Poster
“Letters as images.”
Founded by Josef Müller-Brockmann, Armin Hofmann; ISO-POP movement · Swiss posters, 1950s–70s; revival 2010s
Philosophy
The letterform is the visual. Size, weight, arrangement, and negative space create the entire composition.
The Story
The typographic poster tradition goes back to the Bauhaus and Swiss Design movements, where designers used letterforms not as vessels for words but as visual objects. A letter at 400px is both information and image. The arrangement of text — overlapping, rotated, cut off at the edge, or filling every pixel — creates drama without illustration. The contemporary revival of this aesthetic on the web brings the same principles: headlines that are the main visual element, typography that rewards reading closely, and compositions where negative space is as important as the type itself. The constraint: it only works when the words themselves are interesting. Typography cannot rescue weak content.
