Swiss Design
“Order, clarity, the grid.”
Founded by Josef Müller-Brockmann, Armin Hofmann · Switzerland, 1940s–60s
Philosophy
Design should be objective, universal, and functional. The grid is not a constraint — it is freedom.
The Story
Swiss Design, also called the International Typographic Style, emerged from Switzerland in the 1940s–60s. It rejects ornamentation entirely. Every element — type, image, white space — serves a functional purpose. The grid is not a tool for decoration; it is a system for organizing information with maximum clarity. Helvetica became its signature typeface, not because it was beautiful, but because it was neutral. The goal: communicate without personality getting in the way.
