Philosophy

The Story

Neumorphism appeared on Dribbble in 2019 and immediately went viral. Its signature: shadows that are the same color as the background, but lighter on one side and darker on the other, creating the illusion that an element is pushed out of — or pressed into — the surface. The result looks soft, almost foam-like. It is extraordinarily difficult to make accessible (low contrast by definition) and challenging to use at scale. But for small UI components in wellness apps, fitness trackers, and music players, it created something the flat and material design systems did not: physical warmth. The caveat: neumorphism works best when it is one option in a larger system, not the only tool you reach for.
