Neo-Brutalism

Structure as play.

Founded by Figma community, Koto, various indie designers · Web design, 2020 onward
Philosophy
Take the raw honesty of Brutalism and add the confidence of contemporary design. Bold borders, hand-drawn qualities, bright colors, and intentional imperfection.
The Story
Neo-Brutalism is what happened when the design community got bored with glassmorphism and minimalism. It takes the structural honesty of architectural Brutalism — bold borders, raw shapes, high contrast — and adds a playful color palette, slightly rounded corners, and hand-drawn quality. The borders are thick and dark. The shadows are solid and offset. Everything looks like it was designed in Figma in an afternoon and presented with total confidence. The trick: neo-brutalism works when the product itself is confident. If your product is serious, formal, or financial, neo-brutalism will feel incongruous. But for creative tools, marketing sites, and ambitious startups, it signals: we do not take ourselves too seriously, and that is a feature.
