Flat Design 2.0
“Remove. Then remove again.”
Founded by Apple (iOS 7), Google (Material), Microsoft · Digital interfaces, 2012 onward
Philosophy
Skeuomorphism took realism too far. Flat 2.0 adds back depth — not through fake textures, but through subtle shadows, layered surfaces, and intentional color.
The Story
When Apple released iOS 7 in 2013, the internet had a collective panic attack. The leather calendars, green felt poker tables, and stitched-skin notepad were gone. In their place: flat color, thin type, and a new honesty about what a screen actually was. Flat 2.0 is what came after the panic settled. It kept flat design's clarity but added back something essential: hierarchy. Long shadows, subtle gradients, layered cards — these give the eye places to rest. Flat 2.0 is the visual language of most apps you use today. It is so ubiquitous it has become invisible.
