Dark Mode + Accent
“One color in the dark.”
Founded by Linear, Vercel, Raycast · Linear, Raycast, modern dev tools, 2019 onward
Philosophy
Dark backgrounds reduce eye strain and communicate focus. One precise accent color signals: this is what matters.
The Story
Dark mode existed before 2019 — in code editors, terminal apps, photo editing software. What Linear did was apply it to a mainstream product tool and use it as the primary mode, not a toggle. The insight: when everything is dark, one accent color becomes a powerful signal. Linear's purple is not decorative. It marks the active state, the call to action, the thing you should notice first. Dark Mode + Accent is now the default aesthetic of the developer tool ecosystem. VS Code, GitHub, Notion, Figma — all offer dark modes that follow this pattern. The rule: if you go dark, commit fully. Light UI elements in a dark interface break the immersion.
